On December 2nd 2015, a meeting of the Swiss accredited bodies took place in Berne under the heading, “Adoptions, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.”

EurAdopt had been invited and the Executive Board member Susana Katz delivered a talk on “The Situation of Adoption Agencies outside of Switzerland – Analyses, Consequences, and Problem-Solving Approaches.”

The talk gave an opportunity to illustrate to the Swiss accredited bodies the overall set-up of intercountry adoptions and its effect on the work in European receiving countries. The trend in the number of intercountry adoptions in recent years and the consequences on the agencies in the different receiving countries such as fusion, shift in the main focus of the accredited bodies’ work, or closing of offices.

In Switzerland, too, it is becoming apparent that the development of intercountry adoptions raises the fundamental question of survival of certain accredited bodies, which are currently grappling with how they can deal with this development.
